American Thanksgiving, unlike the Canadian version, is a 4 day long weekend. Since it has been awhile since I took a long trip anywhere, my friends and I went up to Vancouver for the holidays to visit some friends and do some skiing up in Whistler.
To say the least, the weather was crappy for the entire weekend. It was raining the entire time I was in Vancouver and Whistler. Nonetheless, I had quite a bit of fun…
Last time I went up to Vancouver in August, I was able to meet a portion of the folks who went to Japan with me two years ago. I am glad to meet the other folks I missed last time. As my friends and I recalled the various fun adventures over dinner at an Izakaya, part of me wanted to relive that moment; I wanted to relive the moment two years ago when I was an intern in Japan. Despite the fact that us interns were darn poor back then, we were able to stretch our yen though numerous trips around the country and shamelessly, getting pissed drunk in all-you-can drink bars. I liked being a stranger in a foreign country – it’s fun in hindsight to make mistakes and to laugh at them in the future. Two years later and in full-time work, I’ve taken a different approach in life: I’m much more fiscally conservative with my income, and I’ve stopped drinking heavily. I think in part, this is called growing up.
I spent last Saturday up in Whistler skiing. I found out that I sucked at skiing badly since I haven’t skied in a long time. I found it easier to roll down the hill than to stay upright. By the day’s end, I got various bruises on my limbs and this nice cut on my jaw caused by a stray ski flying off my feet. I need to try harder.
I’ll share some pics that I took in Whistler and Vancouver. I was either too busy or too beaten up to take photos – so, I’ll share what little I have.
17 more days till I go home.
